I'd like to share one of the best articles on what it is to be a Designer I have read in a long time

You will learn a lot more from the struggles and failures than you will from successes. As someone once said, "in this life one of the few things you truly own is your failure, because successes are shared by many."

I can say that I wholeheartedly agree after 24 years in the business - although I learned that early on in my career. You do not design for yourself, you design for whoever is signing the paycheck.
